Hard to believe it's already December. There were a lot of things going on in 2019. Here's a quick recap of the latest.

Students have jams! There are some videos up from the open mic nights at the Bar at 805 that some of my adult students played. Former student and open mic host Gus Hergert often sat in on drums.

There are a couple of new video playlists for students that you can get to from this web site. I have organized them a bit and separated the beginner videos from the others. Check that out on the Lesson Supplement page.

Much more is planned. Come see me at Guitar Center in Huntsville, on University Dr and sign up for lessons!

Here's an episode of Know Huntsville, Huntsville's local videocast, from April 2017. Know Huntsville promotes the art and culture in Huntsville, Alabama. From their Facebook page: "Huntsville Alabama is a great town....we can prove it. A local videocast that promotes local Music, Food, Drinks, Arts, Sports and Events in Huntsville AL." My musical segment starts at about 25:55. Give em a like and a sub, and if you like the show share the links with your friends. We all appreciate it!

I had the pleasure this past weekend of playing bass with my buddy Rich Colgan and The Rolling Stones Tribute Show from Toronto, Canada at the Miami Valley Casino in the Cinicinatti Ohio area. It was a great time and a really solid show with those fellas. Here are some videos from that event, featuring Mike Danckert-guitar, Chris Newman-vocals/guitar, Murad Gunduz-drums, Rich Colgan-guitar, and yours truly. Enjoy! If you see us out on the road say "hello"!

Where did the year go? It has been another speedy one, for sure. Halloween season is over and I imagine a lot of people are preparing for the Thanksgiving/Christmas season. There is nothing live on the calendar for me right now but I am prepping some video and audio for public consumption as there is a lot of material I've recorded over the last few months. It was great seeing you all out and about in downtown Huntsville and I will be seeing you again soon but for now I hope your Halloween was fun and that you have enjoyed the video I've posted from the recent live dates.

I'll be keeping you all up to date here and via the mailing list. Thanks to all of you for tuning in and listening. See you soon!

In honor of both Halloween and the impending end of the supplies of the white "BN" T-shirt there is a new load of black T-shirts in production. Right now you can't get them, soon you will be able to get them but only at shows, and after that just give me a shout and we'll work it out. :-). You can catch me at Amendment XXI Thursdays 7-10 pm or catch the Facebook Live broadcast. Here is a bit of last week's program, filmed live from the patio in downtown Huntsville.

I feel like I got launched from last month's post straight to this one! The month has gone by so fast. Lets do this. This Saturday it is my pleasure to play a 12:00 pm slot at the 2017 Rocket City Pride CommUNITY Festival. After that I will be enjoying the atmosphere at Huntsville's 805 campus. If you haven't been there yet check it out. One of the coolest entertainment multi-venue's I've seen in Huntsville. Or anywhere else for that matter.

Also check out AM Booth's Lumberyard. If you follow me on Facebook or Instagram you have already seen a few things about this place. The atmosphere is one of a kind, the layout is one of a kind, and the staff are service industry vets you have known for years if you are a Huntsville native.

While you are here on this web site check out the new shows on Soundcloud. I usually don't post shows as long as the Black Tie for Pride event, but I hope you like it and give my buddies at Free2Be some love. If you are looking for live sounds n video I have that up and some performance video from the past few years.

Over the next month I'll be doing some work with Luis Trevino's Los Tres Amigos in the backup slot. Los Tres Amigos play Mariachi and Latin jazz and it is a blast to do these gigs. Over the years I've sung in German, Latin, Italian, French, but I have never sung in Spanish. The Mariachi tradition is one of passionate devotion to icons like the great Vicente Fernandez and the Tejano sound is bedrock for the southwestern US. I'll be posting more about this tradition in the future.

There will be more going on with the lessons, more video to take home and study, more online offerings, more group lessons, and advice about training for the gig you want to play, whether it is a jam with friends, an open mic, or you want to hit the road with your band. I want to see you succeed, so I am always thinking about things we can do to prepare you!

As for my own music, new things are being written, more on the way! See you guys soon...

Blake Nixtag:blakenix.net,2005:Post/61586082017-05-10T19:00:00-05:002017-05-11T07:36:13-05:00May already?

I am sitting here at the control panel wondering where the year has gone. Is it almost mid May already? Lately I've been down in the hole studying the tools of the trade, trying to learn some mixing and video editing which should help the demoing process out. There have been some fun shows over the last few years, and some travel video with some great scenery, and I'm looking forward to sharing them with you. The live recordings are simple, just an iphone and my rudimentary mixing skills, bolstered by GarageBand plug ins. Every day is like going to school, but the boredom factor is zero. On Soundcloud you can track the recordings as they get posted. In the Garageband cooker right now is a new mix of the Free2Be benefit show (I'm doing another event with them at the end of the month), another Blake and Lucy collaboration or two, some lesson recordings for my students, some old songs and some new songs. It's a busy cooker!

Last Thursday I had an impromptu duet with Ms Lucy T at her very successful art show at the Little Green Store on Monte Sano here in Huntsville. We did a slower, jazzier version of 'You Belong to Me' and then handed Daniel Adamek's guitar back to him so he could finish the night out. There is video floating around on Facebook... Do check out her art but if you see something you like you should grab it quick, they sell very fast.

As always, I'm tinkering with the live set and trying different things. There are a few songs I want to add for the next show. I hope to surprise you guys! In addition to tinkering with the set I am pushing more things online for students. We are working on very personalized practice journals and notebooks to make the most of our practice time and track out progress. I already have students reaping the benefits of a little tweak to their practice routine. There are a few new videos up on the 'Lesson Supplements' playlist, the latest of these are largely for beginners but I always encourage intermediates and advanced students to firm up their fundamentals. The beginner and group jams are off and running and there will be video of the work we are doing there soon!

The work we do in lessons continues to focus on the individual student's path and in the group setting each player shares their take on the music they've heard and integrates their personal musical focus into familiar songs. Some work soloing ideas, some work on beginner strumming, some work on arpeggios, and interpreting cover songs shares the jam time with accurately playing recorded parts. It's great fun seeing it all together. There will be some new things rolling out this summer so stay tuned!

Don't forget to stop by the Fret Shop in Huntsville, AL and check out the gear! Taylor and Martin guitars, Paul Reed Smith (drool), Electro Harmonix and TC Electronics pedals-lots of good stuff, plus the hometown feel of a great local business. The Fret Shop is the kind of place I look for when I'm traveling and want to get to know something about the town.

Thank you so much for listening and I will see you all soon!

Made some changes to the site! You may not notice a huge difference but the video pages have been upgraded. There are now a few playlists for live music, lesson supplements and video blog. The video blog itself will be getting updates in the form of more videos and records of some of the travels of the past year. More live video is on the way as well. I posted a new live show from the road with another band in 2015. Hope you enjoy that. :-) Sorting through audio and video for more entertaining stuff for everyone plus new things for students. Thanks for hanging with me on this journey!

There's a show up on Soundcloud, my set from the Rocket Republic "F**k Cancer" benefit from last October. Rocket Republic is a quality microbrew out in Madison. Worth a trip, say hey to Dave and all the folks out there if you get by. You may have already heard that show if you are following here. Clint Brown played congas on that one. On the way are two more shows that I am mixing on the Macbook. I'll post those soon. I also posted a couple more things with Lucy Thomas if you are following the Blake and Lucy music. These are older recordings. You can click the Soundcloud tab to the left to get to all of that. Let me know if you can't for any reason.

Working on material for the next record, Pennsylvania is one I am excited about. Can't wait for you to hear it! Other working titles include 'Strange Kind of Fascination', 'Bury Me', 'Wishing (On A Saturday Night)' with a few more on the way. If you've been following this page there are a couple of co-writes in the next batch of songs, I'm hoping to get the co-writers involved in the recording. Everybody should hear Lucy sing the one she co-wrote, tentatively titled 'Wings'. Always glad for the support of Keith and Eric at Persistent Management over yonder on the west coast (way over yonder).

Gotta run, catch you soon!

Show coming up October 14! I will be opening for, and playing a reunion show with Diamond White, one of the Huntsville bands I saw when I was in high school wondering what I was going to do with my life. Great show, great rock n roll and singer Rick Byrd gave me one of the first pieces of advice as a wanna-be rock n roll singer. Years later here we are. I'm having fun playing some loud rock and roll. More details soon!

Hey everyone! Just wanted to drop a quick post on you guys. It's Sunday in Northridge (California) and I just finished the travel day two travel video from this L.A. trip which I will upload to both my Youtube and Vimeo pages. I hit Tulsa at the end of travel day one, and started the video on Thursday, the next day. What am I doing on this trip? I talk a bit about that in the video but it's to hang with my team for my manager Keith's birthday and lay some serious groundwork for my next record. That video is uploading as I type. Saw a lot of empty space, grabbed a new road food from a company called Pearson Ranch, saw a spectacular Texas Thunderstorm west of Amarillo and Dyers Barbecue, which is a regular stop for me and got to Albuquerque around midnight. Finally got to see a few of my Facebook friends in real life as well! More on all this soon...

Work continues on the new album. Songs are taking shape and right now there is a pretty wide range of songs; loud and rocking, soft and introspective. I will be heading out to LA to work with my management team Keith and Persistant Management as we make the push for the new release. I will post pictures again.
Hey guys, hope you are doing well. Sunny and 70-ish here right now on a Saturday night. Couldn't be a nicer windows-up season night here in northern Alabama. A lesson at the Fret Shop, and a day spent listening to an 80's era set list for a thoroughly enjoyable side project that I will tell you more about soon. About to rehearse with Lucy Thomas for our gig May 5. More about that later as well. The gist of this is that I've gone from Wild Cherry (bass student) to Saxon and soon to Eva Cassidy and Patsy Cline with Lucy.

I'm very excited about the work I'm doing with Persistent Management's Keith Chagnon, who has been helping me with all the new things that are going on-the new record, the new lesson work and organizing the whole thing. I'm also excited to be on the same team as Eric Knight and Disciples of Babylon, a great West Coast metal act. Looking forward to getting back out to LA and seeing that side of the country again.

So much going on! i will update you again soon as the songs from the record move closer and closer to completion. Thanks for listening! Back to Saxon...

Blake Nixtag:blakenix.net,2005:Post/61585952016-02-19T18:00:00-06:002016-02-20T11:53:05-06:00News for February 20 2016

Hey, hows the weather? It's a balmy February day in Northern Alabama. I am typing with the windows up and listening to a report about record breaking Tropical Cyclone Winston. It is 58 degrees (F) outside here right now and it wont get any cooler, according to the Weather Channel. I've been doing some behind the scenes work this week on the web sites. I have made some changes to Blakenix.com and now have my music instruction information here, including the lesson supplements playlist from my Youtube page. Soon you will see the student blog here as well.

Work continues on the next record. Now that the home studio is set up I'm spending some time learning the new gear and demoing the new material. I have a few taking shape called Pennsylvania and Bury Me (current working titles) with a few collaborations on the list with painter/vocalist Lucy Thomas and Mississippi based singer-songwriter Julie Warren.

I'm pretty fired up about the new things I will have set up for my music students. Most of them are taking guitar, but quite a few are doing ukulele (tenor/soprano, baritone and Uke bass), bass and even dulcimer. The remote assistance I am able to provide in between lessons has really changed the way I teach and seems to be a big help as my students make music a bigger part of their lives. Join the Blake Student Forum mailing list for more information but I will continue to update you here as well.

We will be talking about gear, old music, the weather, the new music I make, and the new music made by my students and friends new and old. We'll also be talking art as some of my talented artist friends are doing things I'm excited about as well.

Thank you all for listening and stopping by! Enjoy your weekend and I will see you soon.

Hey everyone! Just a month in to the new year and we are off and running. There are a lot of things going on and I am very excited about them. There are new tracks on the Soundcloud. I've uploaded some live tracks from last year, some of the tracks from the first session at 56J studio in Mound City Kansas, and a few of the things I've working on with vocalist (and visual artist) Lucy Thomas. The 56J tracks are part of the first things we are working on together up there and are older songs and covers that I have been playing live. The Soundcloud can be found on this website's home page but I will leave the link for you here.

There are some video projects in the works at 56J productions that I am working on with my buddy and videographer Cheyenne Beisiegel. Right now we have some in studio interviews and a few on-location shots to go along with the songs on 'Mr Adams' Blues'. Looking forward to seeing these and doing some new work with the new material.

Speaking of new material, the writing and demoing process for the new album is underway and you should see a new release later this year! I am also excited about working with Keith Chagnon, Eric Knight, and the gang at Persistent Management in Los Angeles on that new release. There will be more details soon...

The Hurricane Community Center is hosting a free New Year’s Eve event that will provide a family friendly, fun and safe venue for ringing in 2016 in beautiful Hurricane Valley just east of Huntsville.

The fun starts at 9 pm with the reading of “Ode to a Polecat” and other polecat tributes followed by a local bluegrass music jam. Next the musical headliner is Blake Nix, who will be entertaining us with his mellow rock and original compositions. There will be games for the children, a visit by Polly the Polecat and a fundraising raffle. For good luck in the coming year, the Community Center helpers will be whipping up a mess of black-eyed peas, cornbread and misty moonshine punch.

The countdown to midnight starts with our Ms. Pole Cat (ugly) Contest; then at midnight the Pole cat drops with our rendition of Old Lang Sine.
